Strengthening the frontline of livestock trade
Training for port and border veterinary officers focuses on inspection, data management and export requirements.
The Ministry of Livestock, Forestry and Range began a series of practical workshops for veterinary officers working at livestock export ports and border points. The first workshop, supported by HoA DRIVE Somalia, took place in Mogadishu. Further workshops were held in Baidoa, Kismayo, Jowhar, Dhusamareb, Bosaso and Lasanod, extending the training to five more federal member states.
The in-person training followed several weeks of online learning on livestock trade and export procedures. It focused on the work officers carry out at export points: inspecting animals and livestock products, identifying disease risks, keeping records and certifying consignments for export.
Sessions also covered animal welfare, health requirements for trade, data management and coordination between agencies. These are essential parts of a reliable export process. Officers need to detect health problems, document their findings and apply requirements consistently across ports and border points.
By strengthening these skills across federal and state institutions, the training supports safer livestock trade and helps Somali exporters meet the requirements of their markets.
