Connecting information and traceability in livestock trade
Somalia presented its work on livestock market information and identification systems at the African Pastoral Markets Forum.
Timely information and reliable animal identification address different parts of the livestock market. Producers need to understand markets, while animal health and trade systems need reliable records.
At the first African Pastoral Markets Forum in Addis Ababa from 13–17 July 2026, Somalia presented its livestock modernization agenda to a continental gathering of African Union Member States, investors, policymakers, development partners and private sector actors.
Two connected systems
In his address to the Ministerial Session, H.E. Hassan Hussein Mohamed, Minister of Livestock, Forestry and Range, showcased two national systems being developed with support from HoA DRIVE Somalia: the Livestock Market Information System (LIMS) and the Somalia Livestock Identification and Traceability System (SOMLITS).
LIMS will expand access to timely market information, while SOMLITS will strengthen livestock identification and traceability. Together, the systems will support animal health management, improve market confidence and help Somali livestock producers and traders reach higher-value markets.
The forum’s focus on mobilizing investment, strengthening market systems and unlocking livestock trade aligns closely with DRIVE’s work in Somalia. Through nationally led reforms and strategic investments, the project is supporting stronger livestock value chains, greater climate resilience, private sector participation, value addition and new economic opportunities for pastoral communities, youth and women.
